[17:13:04] <mechanicjay> Wow, the new payroll system at work is just broken
[17:13:14] <cmn32480> you made $18.74 this week?
[17:13:46] <mechanicjay> No, but folks I know over there were happy that they managed to pay everyone this pay cycle.
[17:14:00] <cmn32480> Nice!
[17:14:06] <cmn32480> but at least everybody got paid
[17:14:43] <mechanicjay> yes. Everyone's manager is wrong, and I think about 50% of folks are getting paid out of the wrong budget, but we got paid.
[17:15:33] <mechanicjay> All sorts of really stupid confusing things you need to do - like go into the system and claim a holiday credit for the July 4th, because the holiday fell on a reguarly scheduled holiday....go figure that one out.
[17:15:47] <cmn32480> I'll go with "Let's be happy everybody got paid, regardless of what budget it came from"
[17:16:31] <mechanicjay> This is what happens when you move from a 20 year old custom application -> CLOUD Provider
[17:16:45] <cmn32480> chaos!
[17:17:15] <mechanicjay> But they didnt' manage to fix the dumb stuff about how we used to get paid. Like pretty much no one does twice/month pay anymore, it's either once /mo or every 2 weeks.
[17:17:38] <cmn32480> I get paid 2x per month
[17:17:41] <cmn32480> 15 and last
[17:17:59] <mechanicjay> apparently the initial roll of this was delayed some large amount of time, with a ton of extra programming expense to handle the 2x per month payment paradigm.
[17:18:50] <cmn32480> nice
[17:18:59] <cmn32480> months of codeing...
[17:19:05] <cmn32480> so that was like 3 or 54 lines of code?
[17:19:17] <cmn32480> s/54/4/
[17:19:18] <exec> <cmn32480> so that was like 3 or 4 lines of code?
[17:19:25] <mechanicjay> No idea, this is just what I hear through the grapevine.
[17:20:11] <mechanicjay> it's all microservicy and responsive and the interface swoops and morphs on you -- it looks more like a toy than a usable payroll system.
[17:23:09] <mechanicjay> Ugh -- I've released the double-edged sword of docker containers on my researchers.
[17:23:31] <cmn32480> BUM BUM BUUUUUUMMMMM!!
[17:23:35] <mechanicjay> Yeah, I no longer care about the package requirement of your software, just ship me a dockerfile.
[17:24:08] <mechanicjay> Downside, "I'm going to compile like a whole distro from scratch in my container!" Do you know long that takes?
[17:25:26] <cmn32480> 6-8 months
[17:25:58] <mechanicjay> "it takes a long time between when I deploy and the changes show up!" Ya think?
[17:26:30] <cmn32480> duh?
[17:28:37] <mechanicjay> I cut them a little slack, they're learning how to use docker from scratch -- I was no better 2 years ago. Still, there's a way to set things up so that you don't want to kill your self -- unless their using the "It's compiling!" excuse while they dick around doing other stuff.
[17:29:23] <mechanicjay> good news, I get to do that this morning, while I rebuild every image on the system do the storage subsystem change.
[17:29:26] * cmn32480 isn't even a programmer and uses that excuse
