[07:55:33] <chromas> Did google kill off its usenet stuff?
[07:55:55] <chromas> Links always just redirect to some useless page
[07:56:24] <boru> They killed it when they introduced google groups.
[07:56:38] <boru> And Eternal September Redux happened.
[08:02:57] <boru> Will I get an email to remind me when my sub for the site runs out?
[08:07:41] <chromas> I don't remember getting one
[08:09:28] <boru> I'll settle for message courier by horseback; I just don't sign in often, so I don't check when it runs out.
[08:25:47] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Horned Dinosaurs May Have Had Horns and Frills to Attract Mates - http://sylnt.us - not-much-has-changed
[09:37:26] <FatPhil> Holy fucking christ, perl module programmers are retards.
[09:39:23] <FatPhil> needed to operate on an array N elements at a time, used splice. wondered if there was a quicker alternative (all that deletion can't be cheap), discovered natatime. Tested both - natatime is 2-3 times slower than slice, and no easier to use.
[09:43:47] <FatPhil> herp derp, I used a closure, therefore I'm clever.
[09:44:15] <boru> Why can't you just work out the offsets into the array yourself?
[09:44:36] <FatPhil> thinking of trying that too
[09:44:59] <boru> You know N, so start = [i * N], end = [(i * N) + N]
[09:45:15] <FatPhil> splice lets me just do my operation on the whole slice, rather than set up a loop with a start and an end
[09:46:16] <FatPhil> slice widths will be variable, you see, so I can't just say $sum=$r[$s]+$r[$s+1]+$r[$s+2]; or whatever
[09:46:47] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Making Hop Flavor Without Using Hops - http://sylnt.us - I'll-drink-to-that
[09:48:02] <FatPhil> I'm also considering just running through the array one at a time, accumulating data for the slice, and if I detect I'm at a boundary I flush.

[14:18:12] <FatPhil> A fucking curse on perl module writers!!!
[14:19:47] <FatPhil> in GD, string() and stringFT() have basically nothing in common either in API or behaviour, despite doing basically the same bloody thing, one's a TrueType update to the other.
[14:20:34] <FatPhil> all the parameters are in a different order, and the meaning of the coordinate is different (one is position of bottom left of string, other is position of top left)
[14:21:01] <FatPhil> 90% of programmers should just kill themselves.
[14:21:20] <AndyTheAbsurd> sure, if you replace "programmers" with "humans".
[14:21:30] * AndyTheAbsurd has a low opinion of the human race
[14:21:50] <FatPhil> Are you my girlfriend?
[14:22:15] <FatPhil> When I say "90% of females are fucking stupid", she sometimes responds "90% of males are fucking stupid".
[14:22:28] <AndyTheAbsurd> no, because (a) I'm not a girl and (b) you're not my type.
[14:22:30] <FatPhil> To which i say "erm, yeah".
[14:22:59] <FatPhil> I'm pretty much nobody's type!
[14:23:34] <AndyTheAbsurd> yet you claim to have a girlfriend
[14:23:36] <AndyTheAbsurd> curious!
[14:23:48] <FatPhil> An old uni mate described our partnership as "you deserve each other" :/
[14:23:57] * boru chuckles.
[14:25:23] * FatPhil deserves a stroopwafel, that's all he's sure of

[14:26:45] <AndyTheAbsurd> reminds me of that stupid cookie clicker "game"
[14:27:14] <AndyTheAbsurd> stroopwafels were one of the types of cookies you could produce
[14:29:47] <FatPhil> I don't know the game, all I know is that stroopwafels and microwaves are a match made in heaven
[14:30:28] <boru> Aren't you supposed to melt the caramel on top of your coffee mug?
[14:32:33] <FatPhil> I learnt the microwave thing from a dutch family, that's authentic enough for me.
[14:33:08] <boru> Heh, quite.
