[00:07:08] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - EU Fines Google $1.69 Billion for "AdSense for Search" Bundling - http://sylnt.us - starting-to-talk-about-real-money
[00:09:00] <chromas> Is the EU on the Dole via Google?
[00:09:22] <FatPhil> Bob Dole? Is he involved?
[00:10:12] <chromas> Well I just looked up the phrase and learned that it didn't come from some Bob Dole program. I was surprised
[00:13:58] <FatPhil> "on the dole"?
[00:14:39] <chromas> yeah
[00:15:27] <FatPhil> No idea what the origin of the phrase is, that and "dole queue". Such a common phrase, one doesn't think about such things.
[00:15:28] * chromas gets his rations of Dole-brand pineapple
[00:15:45] <FatPhil> particularly for those of us who grew up under Thatcher...
[00:15:55] <chromas> Lode (anagram)
[00:16:02] <FatPhil> ooooh - a little bit of political humour

[01:59:48] <Sulla> Howdy bytram
[01:59:58] <Bytram> how ya be?
[02:00:52] <Sulla> Same as always. In middle of buying my first home and a business.
[02:00:53] <chromas> CP violation? [approaching sirens]
[02:01:07] <Sulla> Mostly logged in for once to see if anyone knows if MDC is still alive
[02:01:21] <Bytram> that'll keep ya on your toes!!
[02:01:33] <Bytram> noidea
[02:01:37] <Bytram> wait...
[02:02:03] <chromas> Someone else was asking about him just last night. He made a weird sub the other day
[02:02:41] <Sulla> Normally he follows up negative journals with an update, been a few days and last one wasn't sounding so good
[02:02:56] <Bytram> Last access 2019-03-20
[02:03:35] <Sulla> Well he probably alive then
[02:04:54] <Sulla> How you all been?
[02:05:56] * Bytram just sent MDC an admin to user message that several people had inquired as to his health and well-being and would be nice if he could post something in his journal to allay folks fears.
[02:06:26] <Bytram> finally on vacation, but seem to be spending even more time here than when I am working. =)

[02:10:00] <Sulla> Vacations are nice

[02:21:24] <Sulla> Been reading "rocks and minerals" to my twins. By Zim and Shaffer. Fun having them rummage through yard for stuff to identify
[02:22:15] <AzumaHazuki> coolness :) I actually have an earth science degree, not that it ever got used. always liked rocks and crystals and such
[02:23:34] <Sulla> Have always felt that degrees are best served when they promote personal growth in an area of interest
[02:24:02] <Sulla> I happen to enjoy accounting and got lucky, but have been saving so I can go back for a geology degree
[02:24:09] <AzumaHazuki> that's bourgeoise bullshit, FYI
[02:24:26] <AzumaHazuki> i don't like the idea of degrees as job training but that's life
[02:28:18] <Sulla> Degrees are so terrible. It's all a scam with the GERs that don't do sjit but cost half the degree
[02:29:03] <Sulla> When I was in my last year the uni apparently decided we hadn't been fleaesed for enough and required more gers to get a degree
[02:29:35] <AzumaHazuki> if i could tell my 18 year old self something, it would be "take that Presidential merit scholarship and march it down to DC and shove it up Dubya's lying sagging ass so hard his grandpa Prescott chokes on it in Hell with his Nazi buddies, then go do an apprenticeship"
[02:33:24] <Sulla> Well deserved
[02:34:57] <Sulla> If I had started at community college even I would be significantly less debt for same education
[02:35:12] <Sulla> Trade school is the way to go though
[02:35:27] <Sulla> Or if you know somebody and can intern
[02:38:44] <FatPhil> bytram: that makes sense - "to dole out", etc.
[02:39:26] <Bytram> hth!
[02:39:26] <Bytram> brb
[02:42:46] <FatPhil> the UW
[02:42:54] <FatPhil> I'll start again
[02:43:45] <FatPhil> The US higher education system seems to showing quite a few flaws as it comes under closer scrutiny.
[02:44:23] <AzumaHazuki> it's all for profit. the profit motive ruins everything, because sociopaths at the helm generate more (immediate) profit than decent people
[02:44:45] <AzumaHazuki> running anything "like a business" that isn't and shouldn't be a business is a recipe for complete pizdetz
[02:45:16] <FatPhil> yes, this is weird to a .eu citizen
[02:45:51] <FatPhil> even though the 80s onwards did borrow some of the US ideas
[02:45:58] * Bytram counts his blessings that he got his comp sci degree before the rampant inflation of school costs, but it was not cheap even then. Still, in retrospect, it was well worth it for me.
[02:46:20] <FatPhil> /Adam Ruins Everything/ did a rather depressing one on student loans.
[02:46:42] <FatPhil> I think the UK' already headed down that path.
[02:47:05] <Bytram> could have been less expensive, but I went to a top school and got everything I could from it. there's something to be said about being at a school where every class is a challenge instead of a cake-walk.
[02:47:46] <FatPhil> my parents paid 50% of my accomodatio , which was on-campus, so not free market capitalist ripoff.
[02:48:04] <FatPhil> the education and rest was "free"
[02:48:39] <FatPhil> we used to make money from foreign students.
[02:49:01] <Bytram> I got some scholarships, worked my butt off during school vacations, and got some student loans that I had paid off within a few years.
[02:49:25] <FatPhil> nominal cost was about 2K/yr, Johnnie Foreigner was charged 6K.
[02:49:34] <Bytram> It also helped that I lived frugally. Didn't get a car until after I graduated from college. Never went to Florida on spring break.
[02:49:59] <FatPhil> I still don't have a car!
[02:50:33] <Bytram> ISTR about $6K/yr for me back then (early 80s) but minimum wage was also less than $3/hr
[02:51:38] <Bytram> I *could* get away without a car, but public transportation is not quite frequent enough to make that practicable.
[02:52:39] <Sulla> My four year degree at a meh university in Alaska came to 80k for an accounting degree. Will finally have it paid off this year some 5 years after graduating, but wife and I have put pretty much everything but food costs into loans
[02:52:41] <Bytram> I had car problems once, and lacked the funds to fix it at the time, so for 6 weeks took the bus, instead. A 10-15 minute commute became, at best, a 60-90 minute trip -- each way.
[02:53:04] <Bytram> Sulla++ Good For You!!
[02:53:04] <Bender> karma - sulla: 8
[02:53:09] <Sulla> I just walked everywhere. Once you get used to it I enjoyed the hour walk at -20
[02:53:19] <Bytram> Brrr
[02:53:37] <Sulla> It's fun because your breath turns your beard into a white frozen mass
[02:53:48] <Bytram> Is too far for me to walk to work, never mind trying to buy groceries and carry them home.
[02:53:49] <FatPhil> ouch, to both
[02:54:23] * Bytram knows about frozen beards from first-hand experience, and yes, also at -20F
[02:54:27] <FatPhil> christ, I lag
[02:55:28] <FatPhil> I fell in love with Finland in the 90s because of the whole month it was -20, and I walked to and from work (25mins) every day
[02:55:30] * Bytram is grateful that was an uncommon temp and not the norm... maybe happens every few years for a few days. Otherwise, temps tend to drop to 0F at most.
[02:55:48] <Bytram> *crunch* *crunch* *crunch* *crunch* *crunch*
[02:55:54] <Bytram> ^^ sound of boots in the snow
[02:56:01] <AzumaHazuki> speaking of, Wisconsin is finally warming up
[02:56:01] <Bytram> =)
[02:56:03] <FatPhil> I live that sound
[02:56:07] <Bytram> lol
[02:56:11] <FatPhil> I miss it.
[02:56:14] <AzumaHazuki> it got to a whole 50*F today.
[02:56:21] <FatPhil> love, not live

[02:56:35] <MrPlow> Unable to find weather for that location
[02:56:37] <Bytram> lol
[02:57:09] <FatPhil> it was shitty British weather today here. fuck that.
[02:57:12] <Bytram> oh yeah, weather underground (I think?) apparently changed their API so the bot is broke.
[02:57:26] <Bytram> got up to 39F here.
[02:58:15] <Sulla> I miss the cold, I need to get back to alaska
[02:58:23] <Bytram> we're due for an inch of rain tomorrow, with temps getting just over 40F.
[02:58:40] <Bytram> oh, with winds gusting to 30mph.
[02:59:03] <FatPhil> there's something so refreshing about (clean) cold air.
[02:59:05] <Bytram> Sulla: install a walk-in cooler? ;)
[02:59:23] <Bytram> true that!
[02:59:47] * Bytram glances at the time and realizes it is later than he thought.
[02:59:48] <FatPhil> when I moved back to the UK, I ised to say "it smelt of freezer"
[02:59:55] <Sulla> That would be a Dream come true
[02:59:55] <Bytram> lol
[02:59:58] <Sulla> I could live in it
[03:00:17] <FatPhil> hehe, tonight's insomnia night for me :/
[03:00:30] <Bytram> dang... story queue is almost empty again.
[03:00:33] <Sulla> Wife and I left window open at night and instead just had like six comforters
[03:01:27] <FatPhil> I can'5 step up tonight, sorry, I'm on the phone and g/f's asleep so can't light up the monitor.
[03:01:46] <Bytram> nod nod -- appreciate the thought!!

[03:07:06] <Sulla> Do you follow "days" as dawn to dusk or sleep cycle calculation?
[03:07:18] <Bytram> yes
[03:07:24] <Sulla> They are free to do what you want but until you sleep it's still today
[03:07:32] <FatPhil> bumped into a couple of randos in the pub tonight who we see once every 4-6months, and they'd brought some fresh crowlers from NY to share - one was great!
[03:07:52] <Bytram> #g crowlers

[03:15:30] <FatPhil> just have an ari explosion - sent out 10 ari stories in 100 minutes, or something!
[03:15:59] <Bytram> maybe on april 1?
[03:16:08] <FatPhil> and, yes, I know that's a fencepost error
[03:16:18] <FatPhil> hahahah! yes!

[03:17:19] <FatPhil> 11 stories fits neatly into 100 minutes. 11 posts, 10 10 minute panels in between.
[03:17:45] <Sulla> Figure it would be the perfect time to edit my downloads to zero and get a perfect ratio
[03:18:00] <Sulla> Perfect crime nobody would notice
[03:18:29] <Bytram> okay, that's another story in the queue
[03:18:45] <Bytram> thank you sir, can I find another?

[03:20:08] <upstart> ^ 03Kale is now one of the most pesticide-contaminated vegetables
[03:24:30] <FatPhil> and that's just the hipsters who drink it!
[03:24:39] <Bytram> lol
[03:24:51] <Bytram> and that there's another story.
[03:25:33] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Reuters: Boeing Starliner Flights to the ISS Delayed by at Least Another 3 Months - http://sylnt.us - buying-a-stairway-to-heaven^W-the-ISS

[03:30:13] <FatPhil> I blame Popeye
[03:30:56] <Bytram> sounds as good as any to me!
[03:32:30] <AzumaHazuki> ...i've been eating spinach salads almost daily for 3 months now
[03:32:38] <AzumaHazuki> why do they say avoid it now?

[03:33:59] <AzumaHazuki> oh fuckin' A...
[03:34:19] <FatPhil> so buy organic if available

[03:42:19] <Sulla> Property tax is just government rent
[03:42:27] <Sulla> Pay or get evicted
[03:44:00] <FatPhil> kinda sorta
[03:44:27] <FatPhil> technically we're freehold here, but we still pay a nominal property tax
[03:45:17] <FatPhil> I forget what the repurcussions are if we do't pay, but I think it's little more than a black mark on our record.
[03:50:49] <Sulla> That's pretty nice. My property taxes on my grandparents 4 bedroom home from the 50s is 3k/year
[03:51:09] <Sulla> Same house in Portland Oregon could be 10k/year depending on area
[03:51:54] <FatPhil> ouch
[03:52:51] <FatPhil> for our residential place and our office together we sum to ~450/yr
[03:54:53] <Sulla> That's not terrible
[03:55:17] <FatPhil> these are small town-centre flats though. I think it's -4e/m2/yr
[03:55:35] <Sulla> I recall up in Alaska when you turn 55 they cancel all future prop tax to not risk people losing their homes.
[03:55:55] <Sulla> There are worse forms of tax. My biggest problem with it is the whole eviction thing
[03:56:21] <FatPhil> Our biggest threat is Baltic Germans!

[04:20:43] <chromas> Isn't Huewei teh evil because they spy for China instead of USA?
[04:26:21] <Sulla> On a scale of 1-10 evil. The US is probably a 7, China is an easy 10
[04:27:51] <Sulla> Not that spying by the US is okay. But we don't live in a world where we can choose to not be spied on
