[13:58:28] <pinchy> Im thinking about getting a voip phone setup at the house. anyone have recommendations on providers?
[14:03:46] -!- Sulla has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[14:13:20] <SemperOSS> pinchy: I have good experiences with Vonage with a cheap plan that includes unlimited calls to a number of destinations
[14:15:18] <pinchy> I was about to just get phone service thru spectrum. just add it to my internet package. but what Ive read is that u can get it cheaper or better from other places
[14:16:38] <pinchy> was looking at https://www.amazon.com
[14:17:25] <pinchy> some suggested magicjack
[14:19:14] <SemperOSS> I am in the UK, and checked all the ones I could find. The best offer fro me was Vonage, which comes with a VoIP adapter (saving you the Cisco investment) and an offer when I bought it of two cordless phones.
[14:19:36] <SemperOSS> I can, unfortunately, not comment on the other services as I have not tried them.
[14:33:47] <AndyTheAbsurd> We've got RingCentral at work. It's...meh. The service is nothing special, the web portal for updating settings and such is just okay (you can get voicemails through it, though), the Windows app is okay, the Android app is frankly so bad that I generally don't even stay logged in on my phone.
[14:39:20] <pinchy> i take it with these voip services. u basically get a user/pass that gets stored in the VOIP hardware that connects to whatever the provider is?
[14:40:09] <pinchy> you should be able to take the voip hardware and just plug it anywhere theres a internet connection and be able to use the phone?

[17:59:45] <AndyTheAbsurd> #submit https://www.vice.com This is described as a "sting" operation, but there's no specific target in mind; this is more of a "crackdown" - and an ineffectual one, since they didn't target areas where the crime they were looking for was known to be happening.

[19:44:11] <NCommander> All editors, an NCommander novel is in the drafting stage
[19:44:25] <NCommander> Repeat, this is not a drill. An NCommander novel is being drafted. This is not a drill!
[19:44:48] <chromas> Can you make it multipart so we don't have to look at the crappy subs for awhile?
[19:45:30] <NCommander> chromas, no, but I can do a series of 1980s early boot mechanisms with RIPL with Novell NetWare.
[19:46:15] <chromas> Yes please
[19:46:22] <AndyTheAbsurd> Hey! I only submit *quality* subs.
[19:46:45] * AndyTheAbsurd understands that you may not agree with his position.

[19:47:47] <chromas> oh I see NCommander's story being worked on
[19:48:04] <chromas> The correct answer is yes. Write it in D.

[20:47:47] <SemperOSS> pinchy: Yes, the VoIP box I have from Vonage can go anywhere — with the caveat that it is wired ethernet only. I use my RPi home server to bridge between my wireless MiFi box and a bridged internet. The Vonage box is pre-configured and plug and play: power, ethernet and one or more telephones. The service also has an Android app (Vonage extensions), which is not great but usually gets the job done, i.e. receiving calls and calling out
[20:47:47] <SemperOSS> — and it has a voice mail service as well.
[20:48:47] * NCommander has his article 70% drafted
