[10:20:02] <FatPhil> Do we have any awake americans, or speakers of international English? I have a language use question.

[13:50:35] <FatPhil> do Americans say "fuck if I know" or "fucked if I know", and if both, in what kind of proportions, and has it changed over time.
[13:57:23] <AndyTheAbsurd> Usually "fuck" rather than "fucked" as far as I know... but the US is not a monoculture so it may different away from the place I've lived.

[14:15:40] <FatPhil> I'm slowly writing the top part of this page, but the inspiration is kept at the bottom: http://fatphil.org
[14:15:41] <systemd> ^ 03Losing Your 'Ed
[14:19:18] <janrinok> FatPhil, I've only ever heard 'fucked' - until I saw your earlier comment I didn't realise anyone said it differently.
[14:20:16] <FatPhil> janrinok: yeah, I was completely taken aback by him being confused about my usage.
[14:20:43] <FatPhil> But soon the pieces fell into place, it's part of a bigger pattern of language change.
[14:22:12] <FatPhil> In the "fucked" case, it's not absolutely what a gramatically well-formed phrase would be such that ellision would end up with "fucked if I know", but it's clear that it's supposed to be like a sentence but with some words missing.
[14:22:55] <TheMightyBuzzard> it's a colloquialism, they're immune from grammar
[14:22:55] <FatPhil> presumable "I would be fucked if ...", which does provide the grammar, but not sensible semantics.
[14:23:21] <FatPhil> an idiom
[14:23:56] * TheMightyBuzzard prefers fresh out of give-a-shit
[14:24:30] <FatPhil> there are other phrases where yuo just go straight into the participle: "damned if you do, ..."
[14:24:37] <janrinok> TheMightyBuzzard, they don't mean the same thing to me
[14:24:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> janrinok, nope, i just prefer saying it
[14:24:57] <janrinok> lol
[14:24:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> is more fun
[14:28:22] <TheMightyBuzzard> the -ed being dropped doesn't change the meaning though. it just changes it from future continuous to imperative. i.e. dictates who is to do the fucking.
[14:28:23] <janrinok> FatPhil, another that always confuses me ' I couldn't care less' when some people say 'I could care less' - they have completely the opposite meaning.
[14:28:24] <FatPhil> I still use "so damned [adjective]" rather than "so damn [adjective]"
[14:28:45] <FatPhil> janrinok: that's because they are melotrons
[14:28:54] <FatPhil> they just play back tapes
[14:29:05] * janrinok goes away to look that up...
[14:29:15] <FatPhil> they don't understand the meanings of the words they are saying.
[14:29:32] <FatPhil> old "synthesiser" based on playing back tapes
[14:29:42] <janrinok> found it!
[14:29:51] <TheMightyBuzzard> what's a tape?
[14:29:55] <janrinok> lol
[14:31:05] <TheMightyBuzzard> wonder how many *nix admins have no idea about what 'tar' really is
[14:32:24] <janrinok> very few nowadays I'd imagine, but places such as NASA etc still have loads of data that is awaiting conversion to a more modern digital format
[14:32:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> anyway, just dropping by to check in between coffee and church work. enjoy the expat grammar.
[14:33:00] <janrinok> have a good one!
[14:41:11] <FatPhil> TheMightyBuzzard: it's like an 8-track but with only 4 tracks.

[17:36:23] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - On the Way to Universal Recognition of Let's Encrypt Root Certificate - https://sylnt.us
[17:42:32] <Bytram> FatPhil: From my perspective, the sound of the "ed" in "Damned if I know" is often, umm, "weak" and to someone who has not seen it spelled out, could assume it was "Damn if I know." Perhaps ascribing it to something like "Damn [me] if I know" rather than "[I'll be] damned if I know" (The latter is my vote for the correct usage.)
