[00:35:30] <chromas> The popular term “quantum supremacy,” which refers to quantum computers outperforming classical ones, has inescapable racist overtones
[00:47:49] <requerdanos> wouldn't you have to map one or more races to "quantum computers" and map one or more other races to "classical computers" to stretch that into a racist thing? Honest question
[01:05:05] * Runaway1956 points to the abacus and asks if that is the "classical" computer
[01:05:32] * Runaway1956 sits at the desk and fiddles with his slide rule
[01:07:49] <requerdanos> neither of those is quantum, so sure, classical.
[01:08:22] * Runaway1956 looks at chromas with his pencil and paper, wondering what he is trying to prove
[01:09:19] <chromas> You guys, gals & apaches sound like bigots

[01:58:29] <Bytram> chromas: Glad you asked! I'd have quoted something profound, if I could, but I quickly passed on that idea. Nor am obsessed enough atm, to seeks a definitive source. Some may wait with baited breath, but not I - My curiosity is, for now, sated.
[01:59:45] * Bytram suspects it has to do with the pronunciation of the vowel that precedes it.
[02:00:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> chromas, quantum systems are racist to begin with. there's no black in quark colors.
[02:01:36] <Bytram> chromas: e.g.: Baited, decimated, hated. Massed, passed, trashed.

[02:02:53] <Bytram> Beaded, treated, meted. Petted, melted, bedded.
[02:03:07] <TheMightyBuzzard> the "ed" is pretty much never pronounced as its own syllable. at the most it gets away with only grabbing the last consonant for the syllable it's in.
[02:04:16] <Bytram> whoops, confused muself there. lemme trya again
[02:05:09] <Bytram> Nah. It's too late, and my brain's tired.
[02:05:25] <chromas> is it snow tired?
[02:05:41] <TheMightyBuzzard> like nobody says bead-ed, they say bea-ded
[02:05:41] <Bytram> cached out.
[02:06:15] <Bytram> flash-ed?
[02:06:26] <chromas> good point, but the -ed is the only reason for the second syllable

[13:29:59] * FatPhil now pictures somone skiing, using swords for skis.
[13:30:04] <Bytram> FatPhil: g'day! chromas posted a question here yesterday, thought it might be up your alley. Is there a rule that explains when adding "-ed" to a word makes it add another syllable? Eg: pass -> passed; fill -> filled (one syllable) vs want -> want-ed; bloat -> bloat-ed
[13:30:38] <FatPhil> most of the time it depends most closely on the previous syllable
[13:30:49] <FatPhil> in particular the consonant ending it
[13:31:17] <Bytram> preceding vowel having a long or short sound?
[13:32:47] <Bytram> waited gated mated waded waged(hmmm? maybe not.)
[13:33:31] <FatPhil> voicedness of the consonant beign the strongest indicator
[13:34:15] <FatPhil> but it's a loose correlation, no hard and fast rule
[13:34:58] <Bytram> how 'bout a "soft and slow" rule? =)
[13:35:15] <FatPhil> all the weird examples I can think of off the top of my head are 't' or 'd' ones
[13:38:49] <FatPhil> voiceless: hoped, hooped, whacked, walked, loafed, lashed, lathed, matched - all skip the 'e'.
[13:40:19] <FatPhil> Hmmm, nah, that can't be right, as I have as many voiced examples too.
[13:40:56] <FatPhil> it's basically 't' and 'd' that are the odd ones that you would pronounce. and maybe some strong verbs that will do rando things.
[13:44:51] <FatPhil> other examples seem to be either affectations, or just adjectival forms of nouns, rather than past forms of verbs.
[13:46:20] <FatPhil> for example - the -yd past tenses here were all pronounced as separate syllables: https://rpo.library.utoronto.ca

[13:47:18] <Bytram> WAY WAY back when, I used the MKS Toolkit on Windows and OS/2 to get access to Unix utilities (e.g. sed, awk, ls, tr, etc.) One command they had and which I made great use of was "c" which would take a file (or STDIN) and output in columns. A command switch would control whether it was presented top-to-bottom, then left-to-right or the other way around. Also had an arg for how many chars wide the output would be (IIRC). Is there
[13:47:18] <Bytram> something like that in Linux?
[13:49:59] <Bytram> e.g. cat foo.txt | c -w 132 would would act like a <table> where words would come out left-to-right and then down the page.
[13:50:32] <janrinok> 'columns'
[13:50:41] <Bytram> e.g. cat foo.txt | c -V -w 132 would instead go vertically first,

[13:58:24] <Bytram> Well! That's intuitively casual to the most obvious observer!
[13:58:52] <janrinok> Linux never claimed to be otherwise :)
[13:59:29] <Bytram> I seriously wonder how'd I'd *ever* come up with *that*!! Thanks so much!

[14:00:52] <Bytram> yeah, and what about snaps? and (I don't know what else, but I'm sure there are others, too!)
[14:01:09] <Bytram> flatpack?
[14:01:37] <janrinok> they are just ways of packaging that work on various platforms
[14:01:50] <janrinok> You don't have to use them
[14:02:39] <Bytram> Looks like Mate favors snap -- not knowing better, that
[14:02:51] <Bytram> is how I installed emacs and
[14:03:33] <Bytram> then I find that Mate automatically and periodically looks for and applies updates to snaps?!!! Do Not Want.
[14:04:14] * Bytram embraces the learning curve^W cliff
[14:05:03] <Bytram> thanks so much everyone for the tips and pointers!!!!!
[14:05:31] * Bytram wanders off to ponder and reflect on these new goodies
[14:11:13] <janrinok> I would suggest that you use synaptic. That way you can search for packages, pin versions that you want so that they do not update, and a host of other things.
[14:12:22] <janrinok> it works on top of apt and so you can use either to achieve what you want without getting problems between which one installed what.
[14:14:12] <janrinok> you can also remove your snaps version of emacs, and simply install it by 'apt install emacs' or use the synaptic package manager.
[14:14:44] <janrinok> that way snaps is not required at all
[14:15:45] <Bytram> very interesting! how do I use synaptic?
[14:19:21] <Bytram> okay got it running from the Mate menu by keying in a search for syn and selecting from the displayed list of 2 items
[14:21:54] <janrinok> lots of others are complaining about not being able to selectively stop snaps from updating - the snaps team believe that this makes systems more secure while users say they want to test new releases before installing an update on every system.
[14:22:42] <c0lo> Bytram, I suppose you can use synaptic with an UI automation tool and wrap the scripts as cli tools that you can invoke from sh. As a QA person, it shouldn't be too hard (grin)
[14:22:51] <janrinok> Everything that you can do with synaptic you can also do with apt from the cli - but as you have seen it isn't always intuitive!!!
[14:23:59] <Bytram> Or, from a testing perspective, I set up and run a suite of tests, and have snaps change on-the-fly in the middle of a test run... who knows exactly when it changed during that test run... or that it had even done so?
[14:24:56] <janrinok> synaptic will also show you what each program does - without having to guess what the cryptic package names mean so you can search for a specific function without knowing which package will give it to you
[14:26:11] <janrinok> Bytram, yep, and for those with data caps you don't want updates when somebody dictates. It should be your choice when/if to update
[14:26:27] <Bytram> yeah, that's me, too!

[18:05:34] <chromas> FatPhil: the reason I thought up the "-ed" syllable thing was the word "legged", which is often pronounced as two syllables but not always (I think). Thanks for the infos :D
[18:09:25] <chromas> Bytram: snaps & flatpaks are packages that contain (almost) everything a program needs, including all the shared libraries normally already installed (qt, libjpeg), so you don't have to care what version you already installed or worry about having too much free space on your ssd. They may also run in containers or jails.
[18:14:00] <FatPhil> chromas: that's adjectival "having the property of legs" not the verb form
