[00:27:34] <AzumaHazuki> move went well...took a while to settle in, but i'm feeling at home enough to be making questionable curry in the instant pot so that's a good sign

[01:03:54] <Bytram> AzumaHazuki: glad to hear the move went well.. welcome to your new home!
[01:04:40] <AzumaHazuki> this is amazing. it's "just" a nice-sized 2 bed in a WW2-era building, but to me this is a palace. i'm used to just renting a room somewhere
[01:05:00] <AzumaHazuki> my mother will be here in late June or early July and I can make sure she gets set up and settled in properly

[07:41:51] <janrinok> AzumaHazuki, I'm glad that you have found your own space and somewhere to call 'home'.
[07:42:23] <FatPhil> janrinok: zuzu's offchan presently, I was going to say the same to her.
[07:43:03] <FatPhil> theoretically ther's some bot service for leaving messages, but I've never worked it out.
[07:43:21] <janrinok> Yeah, I know but I cannot guarantee being on at the same time that she is so I thought I would leave a msge here for her.

[07:44:14] <FatPhil> Maybe bot's too clever to store messages for people on-chan - maybe you've gotta test on someone absent?

[07:45:05] <janrinok> I seem to remember ~tell but not =tell
[07:45:24] <janrinok> but at my age I can often not even remember who I am....
[07:45:53] <FatPhil> That's why I have clothing with my name on it.
[07:45:59] <janrinok> anyway, FP, how are you today
[07:46:20] <janrinok> I've just checked - apparently I'm called North Face
[07:46:37] <FatPhil> I had a good night's sleep for the first time in about 2 months, and it's fantastic!
[07:46:59] <janrinok> what has been the problem - if you don't mind me asking?
[07:48:01] * janrinok has checked other clothing - he might be called Marks and Spencer...
[07:48:20] <FatPhil> I really should get some bloodtests done, I've not correlated it with anything dietary or behavioural. I just either can't get off, or wake up at 4. And then I crash at 11. It's all very unpredictable.
[07:49:19] <FatPhil> Melatonin and CBD don't seem to help at all reliably.
[07:49:28] <janrinok> I'm doing exactly the same thing. But my doctor says that it is not uncommon as one grows older for sleeping patterns to change. So I now get up when I wake up, and I am not afraid of having a nap when I want one.
[07:50:48] <FatPhil> Yeah, everything about the body started to change in my late 40s.
[07:51:22] <FatPhil> I used to be short sighted, and now my arms aren't long enough!
[07:51:27] <janrinok> lol
[07:53:15] <janrinok> But I am finding that now that I haven't got the same level of stress in my personal life that I am sleeping a little better than I was before. Still would rather she was here, but coming to terms with living alone.
[07:55:44] <FatPhil> I've not yet had a chat to my dad about the details of going from a 2-person household to a 1-person one has been. It must be quite a change.
[07:55:56] <FatPhil> Are you in a village with a strong community?
[07:57:28] <janrinok> yes - plenty of support from neighbours without being intrusive. And the nurses that cared for S still pop in from time to time to check up on me. The French health support is very good and it is all part of the service.
[07:59:12] <janrinok> ... or perhaps that is just another benefit of living in a relatively small rural community (about 3000 people if you include the entire commune, or about half of that in the village and immediate surrounds.)
[07:59:46] <FatPhil> there are benefits to everyone knowing everyone else, but also drawbacks.
[08:00:00] <janrinok> I have no intention of moving back to the UK - I much prefer living here
[08:00:34] <FatPhil> That's good to hear, I can't see myself moving from here either.
[08:00:50] <janrinok> Yes, that is true, one of the things I find difficult is that everybody knows my name but I haven't got a clue what their name is in most cases.
[08:01:00] <FatPhil> Although at a third of a million or so, Tallinn's starting to feel a bit small. :)
[08:01:18] <FatPhil> As "the englishman", we both stand out a bit, I'm sure.
[08:01:55] <FatPhil> Then again, the g/f stands out even more, being both "the american" and "the albino". I really don't get to tick particularly exotic boxes.
[08:02:09] <janrinok> lol - indeed we do! But I suspect that we are both 'characters' in our local communities and are therefore reasonably memorable
[08:02:09] <FatPhil> cue crude joke from chromas
[08:02:57] <janrinok> I thought his bot would have triggered on his name by now and he should have appeared....
[08:03:03] <FatPhil> Yeah, I'm known in all the pubs.
[08:03:18] <janrinok> I hope that is in a good way...?
[08:03:25] <FatPhil> And indeed, I don't know their names, but they know mine.
[08:03:53] -!- RunawayXXXX [RunawayXXXX!~b136956e@177.54.wrv.lhs] has joined #soylent
[08:03:54] <FatPhil> My local let me run up a tab of 500e last month, so I think I'm still trusted
[08:04:20] <janrinok> trusted - they'll be suggesting that you stand for mayor at that rate!
[08:04:48] <FatPhil> I think I'd need citizenship first, and that would require passing the language exam.
[08:05:36] <janrinok> I've lived in Russia, but I have no intention of ever returning there
[08:06:17] <FatPhil> I have no way of competing against the I-love-mother-russia party candidate and the I-love-the-third-reich party candidate, so it would be a futile bid.
[08:06:57] <inz> Yeah, those with common sense don't get excited enough to actually cast their votes
[08:06:58] <FatPhil> How long did you spend in Russia? I've only had a decent length holiday there.
[08:07:12] <janrinok> I understand. Not many countries have genuine middle-of-the-road parties anymore
[08:07:34] <chromas> oh yeah crude jokes
[08:07:50] <chromas> FatPhil: you're supposed to be ticking her exotic box
[08:08:02] <FatPhil> boom tish
[08:08:26] <inz> I've never been to russia, only soviet union. Didn't live there though, but came home with a case of elevatophobia.
[08:08:54] <janrinok> I lived there for 3 years working for the UK government in the Embassy. So I had something of a privileged life but I did manage to travel widely including to a few of the 'stans so I saw life at all levels.
[08:09:06] <FatPhil> inz: I hope not, we have local elections (which I can vote in) later in summer. There's a new party on the books that promises to use principles like common sense and planning for the future.
[08:09:46] <FatPhil> wowsers - so this was before the fall of the SU?
[08:09:52] <janrinok> they stand no chance of being elected!
[08:10:22] <inz> Yeah, I've actually been twice in USSR, once in Leningrad (now St. Petersburgh) and once in Tallinn back in the day.
[08:10:35] <FatPhil> In the polls, they've been creeping up slowly, and are now well over the proportional-representation cutoff, so not a wasted vote - hopefully.
[08:11:02] <janrinok> I was there just as things changed from Gorby to Putin. Interesting times, as they say.
[08:11:19] <FatPhil> We've only been to St. P, and short tourist day trips (Peterhof)
[08:11:42] -!- RunawayXXXX has quit []
[08:12:14] <FatPhil> We went to Peterhof on the very last day they'd be running the fountains for the year.
[08:12:30] <janrinok> see it at its best - was it crowded?
[08:12:38] <FatPhil> Almost empty!
[08:12:55] <FatPhil> Not many tourists in mid-Nov.
[08:13:07] <janrinok> congratulations - that was perfect timing
[08:13:11] <FatPhil> Russia starts to get cold, as I'm sure you know.
[08:13:29] <janrinok> cold crisp air but still a good chance of sunshine
[08:13:45] <FatPhil> Got some lovely rainbows near the fountains.

[08:23:27] <FatPhil> thanks. I just wish that the old kodak digital camera didn't look so, erm, potatoey now.
[08:24:13] <janrinok> yeah, but technology wasn't anywhere near as good as it is now.
[08:24:20] <FatPhil> I don't think i had an SLR in those days, and I probably wouldn't have wanted to take it to Russia anyway. and compact's just more convenient anyway.
[08:25:51] <janrinok> and when you look at what a smartphone can do nowadays even and SLR of 20 years ago can look pretty mediocre, even if it does give you more control over how you take the picture.
[08:26:45] <janrinok> The downside is that people don't value photos the way they once did and images become much more temporary so memories are quickly lost.
[08:27:05] <FatPhil> They don't value photos unless they themselves are in them. Grumblemutter.
[08:27:42] <janrinok> I don't count selfies as photos - they are simply vanity statements. (also Grumblemutter)

[08:30:48] <FatPhil> 5000A Fuse? that's called a tyre iron, isn't it?
[08:30:57] <janrinok> News Headline: The 'obligation' to wear a mask outside in France ends tomorrow! I'll still wear one as the delta variant is just getting going here...
[08:32:57] <FatPhil> We've just hit 0 deaths in a week (OK, not checked this morning, but it was a box of 6 eggs yesterday), and our case stats have just reached where I stopped wearing a mask during the first wave, so I think I'll be ditching my mask pretty soon.
[08:33:57] <FatPhil> Vaccination's got pretty good coverage, and the disease itself did pretty good coverage, so I think the terrain is fairly non-shedding now.
[08:36:03] <janrinok> I get my second vax in 10 days time and France is hoping to be returning to 'normal' by late August. Not sure that I share their optimism, but I'll be pleased if they do achieve it.
[08:38:54] <inz> Finns seem to be dying in groups. It's like 0, 0, 0, 5, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 3
[08:39:54] <FatPhil> that's just someone who doesn't do the paperwork until it builds up.
[08:40:51] <inz> Seems that your clean sheet didn't quite materialize, 1 dead reported today
[08:42:26] <inz> According to worldometers, that is.
[08:43:23] <FatPhil> the english language news site lags the official data, as does our fancy charts webpage, so I've not seen that datum appear yet.
[08:44:09] <FatPhil> ISTR the g/f mentioned it before she left for the office this morning - I think it was an ancient dude who had preexisting conditions.
[08:45:55] <FatPhil> I must be in a bubble of fake news, as I don't see it on worldometers either.

[13:13:59] <requerdanos> 49 total, according to my IRC client
[13:14:06] <SoyCow5342> re https://soylentnews.org : why not just run certbot and have it do that for you automatically? I'm probably missing something and asking a dumb question but if I have the question, then others likely do to, so I'll play the dumb one
[13:14:08] <systemd> ^ 03Site Updates: New Let's Encrypt Certs Installed on Our Servers Early This Morning - SoylentNews ( https://soylentnews.org )
[13:15:07] <requerdanos> a partial answer is that certbot is essentially intended to simplify the process of installing certificates for websites, whereas soylent uses them for other servers as well (mail, irc)
[13:16:09] <FatPhil> =submit https://www.theverge.com
[13:16:11] <systemd> βœ“ Sub-ccess! "03SpaceX Ignored Last-minute Warnings From the FAA Before December Starship Launch" (1p) -> https://soylentnews.org
[13:16:22] <janrinok> SoyCow5342, there have been problems in the past where the automatic update did not do the update correctly and left us having to try to recover using the linode software alone. However, we now think that that problem might have been solved so we are running the automatic scripts 'manually' to check that everything behaves.
[13:16:31] <requerdanos> another piece is that if something were to go wrong mid-cert-update, an automatic process might take more troubleshooting (=more downtime) than a manual one where you know where you were
[13:17:28] <janrinok> as it is, all the essential boxes have updated correctly but, as requerdanos has pointed out, some of the others still need some work.
[13:18:13] <inz> Reminds me, I should really look into acme-client(-portable) to replace certbot on my main server

[14:16:56] <FatPhil> dell lappies have been shit for decades. had one. will never have one again.
[14:17:05] <FatPhil> not as bad as HP, though
[14:25:01] <Bytram> they're doing maintenance/upgrade on my cellphone tower (which I tether to gt online with my PC)... seeing a download at 22.87KiB/s :(
[14:26:53] <t3> you can experience the nostalgic feeling of getting a coffee while waiting for the page to load
[14:29:13] <Bytram> Eestarted and now I see ~53 KiB/s That's still ~10x as fast as a 56k dialup connection!
[14:29:42] <Teckla> Bytram: Do you have other Internet options in your area?
[14:31:33] <Bytram> I can often reach 1 MB -- this is just temporary -- and they do NOT market my connection activity like Spectrum (my alternative) would.
[14:32:32] <Bytram> Also, it's a small increase in $$ over my cellphone plan. Going cable would be much more expensive!
[14:45:23] <Runaway1956> Paypal seems to be trying hard to irritate me today
[14:45:41] <Runaway1956> Made 6 purchases in the past two days - everything good
[14:45:52] <Runaway1956> made another purchase this morning, and Paypal choked
[14:46:09] <Runaway1956> Kept asking me for a cellphone number - which I don't have -
[14:46:44] <Runaway1956> FINALLY the purchase went through as I was waiting for Paypal automated answering service to connect me to a representative
[14:47:22] <Runaway1956> The message seems to be, "Get a cellphone, or we'll screw with yout."
[14:58:26] <requerdanos> I wonder if a google voice number would satisfy
[14:59:17] <Runaway1956> good question - maybe I'll try that next time
[15:00:04] <Runaway1956> I'm trying to see the downsides to that.
[15:00:39] <requerdanos> well, if your no-cell-phone is because you don't want to be tracked, then having a google account is hardly an improvement
[15:02:46] <Runaway1956> Yes, no? Google voice doesn't follow me into stores, or to work, or to meetings
[15:03:21] <Runaway1956> Google accounts in general aren't good - but mine is locked down far more than Joe Average locks his down
[15:03:54] <t3> you could just get an obamaphone from a rando homeless and use that
[15:04:08] <Runaway1956> hmmmmm
[15:04:27] <Runaway1956> and only put the battery in when I intend to use it maybe
[15:04:38] <t3> or just give it back when youre done
[15:05:05] <Runaway1956> But then Paypal would remember that number, and try to use it the next time around
[15:05:17] <requerdanos> once you associate it with your paypal, don't think you can log in to paypal without it, without significant extra steps
[15:05:49] <Runaway1956> I actually just want Paypal to contact me by email -
[15:06:17] <Runaway1956> "If you authorized this purchase, click the "authorize" link"
[15:07:35] <requerdanos> whereas your rando friend gains a token that assures paypal that the holder thereof is really runaway1956 for the purpose of accessing his money.
[15:07:49] <Runaway1956> correct -
[15:08:04] <requerdanos> I've heard worse ideas, but I'd have to think for a while to remember where.

[20:23:21] <inz> It can even be 20th
[20:26:48] <mechanicjay> It's best to use it as key reference, not a value. Much like a lookup for "Independence Day" returns July 4th, the lookup for "Juneteenth" returns June 19th.

[21:12:36] <FatPhil> To be honest, I think he just mixed a strong crunky homebrew beer with a strong crunky wine, and then force carbonated it.
[21:13:05] <FatPhil> But the label was good
[21:16:17] <FatPhil> even the "brewery" name was good, it was a pisstake contrast to another local homebrewer who spreads his bottles far and wide. One is "attic" brewing, the response was "basement" brewing.
