[06:35:07] <TheMightyChickadee> The Internet interprets censorship as damage, and routes around it.
[06:35:29] <TheMightyChickadee> Unless they do not update their Certs.
[06:37:12] <boru> Good paraphrasing of John Gilmore, but www != 'Net.
[06:37:54] <boru> The 'Net is designed to be decentralised. The client-server model is ultimately broken.
[06:38:02] <boru> But also, so is the notion of CAs.
[06:38:41] <TheMightyChickadee> Agreed.
[06:39:22] <TheMightyChickadee> Can we have a phone number, or a utility bill, before we let you access our website?
[06:39:43] <boru> Don't get me started on that nonsense...
[06:40:52] <boru> "Please view these ads, because people were never able to host websites without them before. Also, please train google's autonomous driving AI before you can do anything since you're accessing our server from a suspicious IP range."
[06:41:39] <TheMightyChickadee> How else will we know you are a real person, well, other than captchas. For example, I am an accused sockpuppet, wrongly accused, and now I only exist in the quasi-world of IRC!
[06:43:31] <boru> I don't keep up with the SN drama. It's not my thing. I barely have time to participate in discussion there, these days.
[06:44:36] <TheMightyChickadee> Appreciated your offer to assist, earlier today.
[06:45:02] <boru> In some respects, I feel that discussion can be better with all identities removed; ideas matter, rather than people's preconceived notions of individuals.
[06:45:29] <boru> Assist with what?
[06:45:33] <boru> I'm not long out of bed.
[06:45:44] <TheMightyChickadee> Cert renewal
[06:45:51] <boru> Online discussion, that is.
[06:46:21] <boru> Ah, that. I was more of a backseat driver there. I'm mostly ignorant of how the servers are set up at SN.
[06:46:40] <TheMightyChickadee> As are we all, it seems!
[06:47:26] <boru> I posit it's usually a problem of doing something so infrequently, that one is out of practice. Well oiled doors, and all that.
[06:48:22] <TheMightyChickadee> Has happened once or twice before, but at long intervals. The suggestions on automation might be useful.
[06:48:31] <boru> So having the cert expire every few months is probably a good way to remedy that.
[06:48:53] <TheMightyChickadee> Ha! One would think!
[06:49:46] <boru> Well, yes and no. It's more simple here that at least SN isn't managing a CA. You can just generate a CSR and give it to letsencrypt. I don't like their model, but at least it has democratised TLS for the www.
[06:50:30] <boru> If you're managing CRLs and signing certs, there's a bit more involvement.
[06:51:09] <boru> But I've almost entirely automated that process myself, so it _is_ doable.
[06:51:19] <TheMightyChickadee> What is wrong with the EFF model, for a site like SN?
[06:52:13] <boru> 1) I don't trust letsencrypt and 2) I think the CA model is utterly broken. IMHO, trust cannot be managed securely like that.
[06:52:53] <chromas> Put...put it on the blockchain
[06:54:02] <TheMightyChickadee> That is why I asked for your cell phone #, with GPS enabled, but why would you not trust letsencrypt, when their entire purpose is to prove the CA model is broken?
[06:55:14] <boru> Because of the corporations involved, and by extension, the government of the USA.
[06:55:31] <boru> These entities are morally bankrupt, and untrustworthy.
[06:55:59] <TheMightyChickadee> EFF? Bunch of old libertarian leaning hippies, if I recall correctly.
[06:56:13] <boru> They aren't the sole founders, however.
[06:56:30] <TheMightyChickadee> Oh, Linux Foundation type stuff?
[06:56:32] <boru> Nor the only sponsors.
[06:56:59] <boru> Several more than that; the big web companies, Cisco, Mozilla etc.
[06:57:47] <boru> The EFF I have considerable respect for, but getting in bed with that lot... I'd have expected more.
[07:15:23] <Bender> [SoylentNews] - Scientists Create Matter From Pure Light, Proving the Breit-Wheeler Effect - https://sylnt.us - star-trek-replicators
[07:18:08] <TheMightyChickadee> Ah, a new front page posting I can actually view! Hoorah!
[07:19:55] <boru> Great news. Now if only they can progress it far enough for high fidelity nutrient replication...
[07:20:06] <TheMightyChickadee> But since FatPhil and janrinok have denied my personhood, how could I possibly actually enjoy them? Do you want my phone #?
[07:20:47] <TheMightyChickadee> Hi-fi Nutrient replication, like Soylent Green? Oh, dear.
[07:21:22] <boru> I was hoping for Bratwürst and coffee, but hunger is the best sauce, I suppose.
[07:23:57] <boru> I just noticed the new poll.

[08:44:14] <TheMightyChickadee> It's OK, I have been permanently banned. I am not even here, right now! Interesting states of affairs on SoylentNews!
[08:53:13] <FatPhil> So, how long are you going to sit on your newly registered sock-puppet accounts before you make them active?
[08:54:25] <FatPhil> Just wondering - are you also behind the robotic creation of hundreds of accounts, thinking that that might be the best way to hide the creation of a couple that you might actually want to use?
[09:04:34] <TheMightyChickadee> Again, oh Phil of Phat, you are letting your imaginatin run away with you. I do not even exist any more, so obviously I cannot creat new accounts.
[09:05:04] <TheMightyChickadee> And the last thing SN wants is more accounts, since they might be leftists, or sock-puppets.
[09:09:02] <TheMightyChickadee> What is that command for latest username?

[12:43:33] <t3> the C/F thread has sparked a question in my mind: how much does the accustomed 0 point affect perception of danger?
[12:44:58] <t3> several C users seem to think that 0C is a "danger point", while I am quite certain I couldn't get frostbite if I tried at that temperature, but 0F will keep me indoors
[12:49:03] <janrinok> t3 - I'm not quite sure why people are so frightened of 0C - perhaps they are southerners who think that anything below 20C is cold. Having lived in Russia for 3 years -20C is not uncommon and people go about their lives much as they usually do. You just dress for the weather.
[12:56:48] <t3> so a north/south divide more than F/C, makes sense
[13:24:45] <c0lo> -20C - just don't lick the door knobs and you'll be fine.
[13:27:27] <inz> -40 is the standard temperature
[13:31:05] <janrinok> inz, that's a bit cold for ice cream, but if you say it is standard that's good enough for me

[16:14:08] <FatPhil> I wish ISPs wouldn't needlessly move DHCP addresses around on disconnects.
[16:15:00] <FatPhil> well, it gives them the opportunity to charge you $$$ for a static one, of course.
[16:15:07] <FatPhil> Remind me - are ISPs cunts?

[17:37:59] <boru> Whilst I was living in the UK, I was with Zen Internet for a while. Probably the best ISP I've ever had a contract with.
[17:38:45] <boru> They were all for delivering the bandwidth and latency you paid for at any time of the day, and had no policies with regards to what sort of traffic you sent over their copper.
[17:38:55] <boru> Bittorrent and all.
[17:39:15] <boru> They stated that explicitly on their website, and delivered on it. No traffic shaping, no monitoring.
[17:39:43] <Ingar> my ISP seems to fsck with torrent during the day
