[05:44:18] <halibut> FatPhil: Today I learned what ``semi'' means, when referring to the tractor-trailer combination. Apparently, it refers to the trailer portion, which only has half of the full-trailer undercarraige (wheels in the back, but not front). I agree it seems a bit of a stretch to refer to that as ``semi'', though. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org

[06:57:13] <chromas> halibut: what about semi-truck?
[06:57:50] <chromas> When I was a wee lad, that was the default type of truck, so it was just called a truck
[07:17:30] <chromas> https://kfdm.com
[07:17:31] <systemd> ^ 03Homeowner shoots at naked man accused of breaking into home and trying to steal cat
[07:18:57] <halibut> chromas: I think we might be talking about the same thing? FatPhil was wondering why they were called semis (or whatever the plural of semi is), when they did not appear to be half of anything.
[07:19:46] <chromas> Sure, but the semi-trailer would be the trailer part, while the tractor would be a semi-truck :D
[07:19:47] <chromas> or something
[07:20:46] <chromas> anyhow yeah, it's a semi (not the boner kind) because it's a two-piece kit
[07:41:05] <halibut> Seems like one of those terms that was not really well thought out in the first place, and then used so frequently it grew to beyond what it was supposed to be used for, and now the term has even less of its original meaning.
[07:41:24] <halibut> Like ``hacker'', I suppose.

[07:48:43] <drussell> Semi trailer has to do with the axle loading and weight distribution...
[07:49:52] <drussell> The semi-trailer is putting much of the load on the "tractor" truck which is hauling it, instead of it just being hitched along for the tow ride
[07:51:40] <drussell> Additionally, when you have multiple trailers, you can't normally have a "fifth wheel" style trailer pulling another "fifth wheel" trailer...
[07:53:04] <drussell> The arrangement of axles and wheels must be different to make road trains...
[07:53:17] <drussell> Interestingly, as far as I know we
[07:53:59] <drussell> we're still allowed to, for example, tow an RV travel trailer
[07:54:57] <drussell> behind a typical pickup truck or van or whatever and then have another hitch on the back of the trailer and tow another trailer, say a boat or whatnot, behind that here in Alberta
[07:55:56] <drussell> as long as you don't exceed the GCWR of the tow vehicle, it's valid... As soon as you cross into BC multiple trailers are not allowed behind the tow vehicle
[07:56:32] <drussell> This is for private citizen class 5 licenses in Canada, I mean... not commercial shit
[08:00:09] <drussell> There is some total length restriction, 66 feet I think if, for example, you've got a pickup truck towing a 5th wheel-style RV and then a boat behind that...
[08:01:03] <drussell> but you're allowed multiple trailers behind your truck when properly equipped here, evan as a private individual with non-commercial class 5 license
[08:01:31] <drussell> even
[08:05:56] <drussell> (I don't think multiple trailers are allowed in BC even for commercially licensed vehicles in BC, BTW... You see lots of two-trailer "semi" trucks in Alberta but I don't ever remember seeing any in BC)

[10:26:29] <systemd> ^ 03Lesson 3: Configuration: Truck Tractors and Semi-Trailers
[10:27:00] <Runaway1956> It should be noted that virtually all "trailers" in private ownership are "semi-trailers"
[10:27:41] <Runaway1956> Campers, utility trailers, horse/livestock trailers, whatever, part of the weight of the semi-trailer is carried by the towing vehicle
[10:27:57] <Runaway1956> Just about all full trailers today are farm equipment
[10:28:15] <Runaway1956> and maybe some mining operations use full trailers
[10:28:44] <Runaway1956> full trailers are harder to tow, because they weave behind the towing vehicle
[10:30:53] <Runaway1956> Oh, full trailers also back up differently than semi-trailers
[10:31:21] <Runaway1956> a guy who is used to backing up a semi can easily get confused when a full trailer won't go where he wants it to
[10:33:45] <Runaway1956> And, I suppose that I should note that legal definitions are likely to change when moving from one country to another

[12:15:45] <janrinok> 3 minutes - he's improving. Eventually, he will not show up at all. I wonder if he knows that his calendar is not working - Ides of October was yesterday and we are all still here.
[13:11:48] <Runaway1956> The rain is beautiful - instead of a cloudburst, it has settled into a perfect slow, steady rainfall that should soak into the ground
[13:12:36] <Runaway1956> You never know what you're going to get - the weather people described it as "thunderstorms" which could have been ugly
[13:31:41] <fab23> Runaway1956: are there not any rain radars available in your area? E.g. for Switzerland we do have this: https://www.meteoschweiz.admin.ch (currently no rain, but for the past there was a little in the top left.

[14:52:28] <FatPhil> Runaway1956: red-green colourblind?
[14:53:39] <FatPhil> in Europe, the green lights always have quite a bit of blue in them, so that red-greeners can have a hope of telling the top one from the bottom one, as otherwise, there's no way.
[14:53:58] <janrinok> The most common kind, so man has made decided that they should have opposite meanings and lets see how many accidents we can create!
[14:57:25] <FatPhil> I think we're about 7-10% of the population. It's not a minority "handicap" at all.
[14:59:32] <FatPhil> I do know a blue/yellow guy - I just don't understand that all, even though I'm red-green. Luma, motherfucker, do you not see it?
[14:59:37] <janrinok> far from it - and nowadays there is no excuse for using red/green spectra for displaying information. It is easy to make different options that the user can choose which work best for him/her. https://davidmathlogic.com needs js.

[15:00:59] <janrinok> sorry, not trying to be preachy - just annoyed that we don't seem to be making progress in this area

[15:01:54] <janrinok> I step back ...
[15:02:11] <janrinok> where did you do the courses?
[15:02:41] <FatPhil> oooh, that would require rewinding my mind-tapes many decades
[15:03:15] <janrinok> lol - disregard. it is a Sunday after all. I am part way through a class of Ricard and ice
[15:06:14] <FatPhil> we walked from the brewpub - amazing new barrel aged stout - where we did a revisit of a couple of old favourites, to another pub today, where, as soon as we arrived, it started hammering it down with rain. So we stayed there for a while...
[15:07:07] <janrinok> good excuse - as if one were needed
[15:07:31] <FatPhil> Oh, we street-ticked ("ticking" is having a new beer, and giving it a rating/review) on the walk.
[15:07:42] <janrinok> Give Anna my belated best wishes for the weekend
[15:07:51] <FatPhil> quite a fun sunday afternoon, all-together
[15:08:32] <janrinok> I envy you - there is no such rural equivalent in France. Even the tabacs are closed!
[15:08:39] <FatPhil> hat doff in return
[15:08:52] <FatPhil> or was that a forelock tug?
[15:08:59] <janrinok> whatever - thank youi
[15:09:00] <FatPhil> her semiotics are terrible
[15:19:12] <fab23> FatPhil: hm, so the transition from the green to the red site was easy for you. :)
[15:21:16] <janrinok> ? did it change!
[15:22:27] * janrinok is actually not colourblind but I appreciate the problems that it can cause including being viewed as unsuitable for some jobs: electrician, various driving/flying roles and so on
[15:25:43] <fab23> I have set the Theme to Greyscale, which for me it seems to be the best match for the dark desktop theme.
[15:28:47] <janrinok> I once had a bit of software (I don't remember which one...) that indicated actions to take with either a red blob or a green blob, but which were not always in the same location. A family member was almost in tears trying to use it. Changing themes did not help them - although this was many years ago so I hope that interfaces have improved since then.
