[05:02:34] <halibut> fab23: I made it embarrassingly far into that article before realizing I was being trolled. To my credit, early on I was starting to think they were making a big deal about something silly or borderline stupid, but I did not catch on that is was fully intentionally until much futher into the article.
[05:02:39] <halibut> Well done.
[05:45:44] -!- AzumaHazuki has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[07:43:36] <fab23> halibut: you're welcome :)
[07:47:41] <fab23> halibut: did you miss the announced symposium in the first part?
[07:49:39] <halibut> I did see it ... but I did not attribute anything special to it. The entire day went by without any of the usual pranks, and I just figured the day had gone and past, I guess.
[07:53:40] <fab23> so far, it was also the only such posting I have seen
[07:56:42] <halibut> In this day and age of NFTs and similar things, my default assumption is that the things I read about are overhyped. I was thinking that about this article. When it turned out to be intentional, I guess that was actually an improvement.
[07:57:40] <halibut> Oddly enough, I call various things overhyped, but the truth is that as long as enough other people believe in them (/ are fooled by them), they are real enough to make money off of.
[07:58:00] <halibut> I suppose in a sense, that is living up to the hype, not overhyped.
[07:59:00] <halibut> Just because the emperor has no clothes does not mean that a certain pair of tailors weren't really, really clever and brave.
[07:59:13] <fab23> buy my cute bytes, they will be worth millions in a few years :)
[07:59:45] <halibut> I could just say, ``Bah! Humbug!''
[08:00:10] <halibut> ... and miss out on millions in a few year. My solace would be that I was silly then, and silly now ... but I am still short those millions.
[08:00:58] <halibut> I thought it was pretty cool and interesting when I read that somebody had made this thing called ``Bitcoin'', and convinced somebody else to sell them a pizza for 10,000 of them.
[08:01:36] <halibut> I still think it is cool and interesting, but nothing else, and yet, had I gotten in on it then, it would have been a very lucrative ``and nothing else.''
[08:02:06] <halibut> I am just jealous it was not my idea.
[08:02:10] <fab23> just used up electrical energie
[08:02:20] <halibut> Not as much, as first, but yes.
[08:03:59] <halibut> The increase in mining cost makes it resemble a sort of pyramid scheme. The switch of Ethereum and others to proof of stake helps with that.
[08:07:24] <fab23> and we had a shortage of HDD and SSD :)
[08:07:57] -!- norayr [norayr!~norayr@37.252.sq.ypj] has parted #soylent
[08:08:31] <halibut> Buy my 1GB hard drive. Only $100 now, but may be worth millions in a year or so!

[08:09:21] <janrinok> ... I might, if I knew what was on it :)
[08:09:33] <halibut> Zeros, ones, and dust.
[08:09:42] <janrinok> probably not then :)
[08:09:56] <halibut> Who knows ... maybe you'll find a 2 on there?
[08:10:21] * janrinok was hoping for next week's lottery numbers, or the winner of this years Grand National
[08:11:36] <halibut> If I have 1GB worth of random bits, I can pretty much assure you that next week's lottery numbers are on there. The trick is recognizing them this week.
[08:11:55] <halibut> Especially since they probably will not be contiguous.
[08:12:12] <halibut> Carefully planned stenography, of course, not random chance.
[08:12:53] <halibut> stenography -> steganography
[08:15:40] <janrinok> of course, I knew it was a bargain really
