[06:53:38] <chromas> Got a fat cricket chillin' on the kitchen floor
[06:53:57] <chromas> dumb as a cat; as I got close, it started hurrying away, then jumped back in front of me, the ran off again
[06:58:01] <chromas> These Tesla cards use the CPU power plug instead of PCIe
[06:58:21] <chromas> probably because the PCIe one is retarded. Only four of the six pins are powered
[06:58:53] <chromas> then if you have the 8-pin version, that tells it the other two of the six pins are connected but don't actually provide power

[08:15:07] <janrinok> Morning all!
[08:15:36] <janrinok> ..... compiling is probably the only response I will get from chromas!
[08:16:01] <chromas> still running fortran tests
[08:16:19] <chromas> also, g'day
[08:16:22] <janrinok> chromas, where are you buying these 'Tesla' cards? I cannot find them on the web
[08:16:31] <chromas> scamazon
[08:16:50] <chromas> it's used and ancient so it's cheap
[08:17:15] <chromas> https://www.amazon.com
[08:18:23] <chromas> hm bot's here but the tmux window disappeared
[08:18:27] <janrinok> a 24 Gb card looks nice but at $1399 it is too rich for me
[08:19:05] <chromas> it's 175
[08:19:51] <chromas> but also nearly as old as sn
[08:20:24] <janrinok> does it do the job?
[08:21:00] <janrinok> Ah, US will not ship them to Europe, and local amazon only display the brand new versions!
[08:21:19] <chromas> what's the new version? z40?
[08:22:33] <chromas> I haven't got it up yet. They use the CPU 8-pin power plug instead of the pcie 8-pin. Only power supplies I have with enough plugs are in use elsewhere so I gotta wait on an adapter
[08:23:20] <chromas> =ping
[08:23:20] <systemd> Pong!
[08:24:29] <chromas> oh whoops my term was labeled for that box but I wasn't connected
[08:24:38] <janrinok> V100 Volta (€5098) or A100 (€8558)
[08:24:41] * chromas is getting too many puters
[08:24:55] <janrinok> I've got 18 - wot u got?
[08:25:49] <chromas> A100. One listing is 8 kilodollars while the other is 19k, but with the same specs
[08:26:07] <chromas> only 40GB of vram. lame
[08:26:27] <janrinok> where the hell do you find the drivers for them?
[08:26:42] <chromas> in the package repo
[08:26:47] <janrinok> or do they work straight out of the box?
[08:27:04] <janrinok> Never heard of them before the last week
[08:27:05] <chromas> as far as I know it's just an nvidia gpu with no outputs
[08:27:33] <janrinok> hella expensive
[08:27:36] <chromas> so you can do all the cuda stuff on it, or use it for game streaming or whatever
[08:28:33] <chromas> do you include phones and stuff in your list o' puters?
[08:29:34] <janrinok> no, 6 raspberry pi, 1 laptop, and the rest are desktops of various ages. All work but some only good for gateways or simple servers.
[08:30:04] <chromas> hm I'm only actively using six. the rest are either stashed-away laptops or are phones/tablets/other people's pcs
[08:30:21] <janrinok> I've got solar panels installed to keep the running costs down.
[08:30:59] <janrinok> If I turn the computers off I am feed my excess to the local grid!
[08:34:43] <chromas> I should set up some giant squirrel cages so the homeless people can power our local businesses

[16:17:49] <Runaway1956> We had another heavy rain this morning, electricity was out, more top soil washed away, no severe damage though.
[16:18:25] <Runaway1956> Apparently an electrician has been killed, and another severely injured while working on power outages
[16:18:54] <Runaway1956> So, no personal losses here to speak of, but, the storms have their price.
[16:20:52] <Runaway1956> That's from my wife's news feeds - I guess I need to check Facefook for a link
[16:29:12] <Ingar> as long as your castle walls didn't wash away
[16:29:15] <janrinok> Stay safe!
[16:29:51] <Ingar> I have mixed freelings about the weather
[16:29:54] <Ingar> *feelings
[16:30:17] <Ingar> these clouds are bad for astronomy, but as long as it is wet, I don't have to mow the lawn
[16:30:39] <janrinok> we've had an unusually hot and dry day today - everyone around us seems to be getting heavy rain.
[16:35:43] <fab23> here was also a warm and mostly sunny day
[16:36:05] <Runaway1956> ingar, you don't have to mow when the temperature stays above 100 degrees for a month either
[16:36:45] <Runaway1956> Oh - we have a new routine when the lights go out.
[16:37:17] <Runaway1956> Instead of searching for candles, I just go outside and collect the solar powered post lights.
[16:37:36] <Runaway1956> I never put screws in them, I just lift them off the post, and carry them inside.
[16:38:20] <Runaway1956> Gave four of those post lights to sister in law this morning, she thinks they're pretty cool
[16:48:22] <Ingar> Runaway1956: that hot for that long never happens here :p
[16:53:56] <Runaway1956> I see that Starliner finally got off the ground.

[17:02:54] <drussell> Today here is last sane temperature day, supposedly a high of 23 or 24... The rest of the week is 30 or above.
[17:03:14] <drussell> I'm not ready for summer temperatures yet... I'll probably have to go stand in the river to not melt.
[17:03:34] <drussell> Or just jump in the lake for a swim... It was plenty warm enough when I checked it a couple weeks ago.
[17:06:47] <drussell> Well, I was even mostly IN the lake when I reconnected the water line at my uncle's cabin before the May long weekend, and it was comfortably warm even then.
[17:10:37] <drussell> I should mow my lawn today, I suppose since it's finally dry now. I got a new air filter for the riding mower the last time I was in town, so it should be less ornery than the last cut if I put the new filter on. It was unhappy with the cloggedness, it seemed...
[17:11:55] <drussell> I even bought it the proper pre-filter too! It should love me now, right?!! :)
[17:13:25] <drussell> It's never had the pre-filter on it as long as it's been here, which is what 15? 16 years now?
[17:13:33] <drussell> Poor thing...
[17:15:25] <drussell> First, though I need to go to one of the resorts and wire up internet to lots 72 and 93 pedestals, got customers coming tomorrow, it's nice to have their fancy new internet waiting for them when they arrive! :) Customer service and all, you know...

[17:18:49] <drussell> Perhaps tomorrow when I plan to do a test fire up on my boat... That might require some luck! :)
[17:19:04] <janrinok> well save it until then....
[17:19:17] <drussell> Indeed... Thanks! :) lol
